A Diary of the Final Cruise of the RMS St. Helena to Tristan da Cunha, January 15-28, 2004

A British overseas territory, the island of Tristan da Cunha, 1,750 miles (2,816 km) southwest of Cape Town and 1,450 miles (2,333 km) southwest of St. Helena Island, is the most remote inhabited island in the world. Roughly equidistant from Cape Town and Rio de Janeiro and situated just east of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, Tristan da Cunha rises spectacularly some 18,000 feet (5,486 meters) from the seabed. Its peak, snow-covered during the Southern Hemisphere winter, lies 6,760 feet (2,060 meters) above sea level. Tristan is 38 miles (99 km) square and about 29 miles (46 km) in circumference. There are six islands in the Tristan da Cunha Archipelago: Tristan da Cunha, Inaccessible, Nightingale, the much smaller islands of Middle and Stoltenhoff, and the distant Gough. Discovered by the Portuguese admiral Tristao da Cunha in 1506, Tristan da Cunha has been inhabited almost continuously since 1810. This is the diary I kept on my round trip voyage from Cape Town to Trist (more…)
